Free battery recycling

ree

Clutha District Council, in partnership with the Phoenix Recycling Group, is pleased to announce the launch of a free battery recycling service for all residents across the district. This initiative is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to reducing hazardous waste and supporting environmentally sustainable practices.

What Batteries Are Accepted?

Residents can now safely dispose of a wide range of household batteries, including:

• Lithium Ion (Li-ion)

• Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd)

• Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)

• Embedded batteries in small devices such as vapes, smoke alarms, and personal locator beacons

Convenient collection points where you can drop off your batteries have been set up at:

• Tokomairiro Community Hub – Milton (from Thursday 3 July)

• Clutha District Council Rosebank office

• Balclutha Community Library

• Tapanui Community Library

For Larger Batteries (e.g., car batteries): Please take these directly to Mt Cooee Landfill in Balclutha for proper disposal.

Funded by the Waste Levy Fund, this program supports Clutha’s commitment to enhanced recycling services and cleaner, safer communities. Clutha District Council encourages all residents to take part in this free service and help protect our environment for future generations.

“Batteries contain environmental toxins like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can leach into our soil and waterways if not disposed of properly,” says Scott Martin, Waste Education Officer at Clutha District Council. “By recycling your used batteries, you’re not only keeping hazardous waste out of landfill—you’re helping us recover valuable natural resources and protect the environment for future generations.’’
