The Hub - Who are we?
The Hub - who are we?
The Tokomairiro Community Hub was established in 2016 and is a central Hub for service providers and organisations to deliver much needed health and social services to the community. These services are additional and complementary to the pre-existing services. Milton Community Health Trust is the umbrella organisation for the Hub, with responsibility for the employment of the Hub Coordinator.  Before the Hub was established, locally available specialty health and social service provision was minimal in the area. The difficulty for many providers was finding an appropriate, affordable venue/office space and consumers would often have to travel to Balclutha, Dunedin or further afield which decreased accessibility for many. The Hub initially had two service providers and now has twenty regular providers and numerous  casual users. We host community meetings and workshops both during the day and evenings. On weekends the Hub is used to facilitate things such as parental classes, and is available to other organisations to use the space for meetings and activities. We have also collaborated and assisted Project Bruce where needed with projects and events that take place in and out of the Hub.
Client and visitor numbers have significantly increased over the years of operation and continue to stay steady every month.  We believe and positive feedback confirms that this is because we have created a welcoming, friendly open place that anyone can call in to access vital services.  Providing a place where people feel confident and comfortable enough to ask for help has encouraged many people to make those connections with services.
The Hub, any Hub renovations and operational costs are grant funded and are also offset by the rental fees collected. The support received from grant funders and volunteers for assistance with renovations, furnishing the Hub, workshops and other activities has played a significant role in ensuring the ongoing growth and success of the service provision and also enabled us to continue to provide a space that is user friendly and able to grow with our community.  Any funding that we receive has a direct benefit to those in need within our District and enables continued employment of the Hub Coordinator.Â
